Our Facility
The Belmont Historical Society’s Cultural and Heritage
Learning Center is housed in the former R. L. Stowe House, built in 1899, and
thought to be the third oldest house inBelmont
. This is the house in which Robert L.
Stowe, Jr., Catherine Stowe Pharr, and Daniel J. Stowe were born. The house sits
on a property which also contains a free-standing kitchen, a mill house, and a
garage. The landscaping includes gardens (round or oval above) named for the
separate textile mill villages that once were so prominent in Belmont
. (See map of the
property above). The house and property were deeded to the Belmont Historical
Society by the R. L. Stowe Foundation.
The state recently agreed to move
the Historic Marker for Major William Chronicle onto the grounds where it
could be properly maintained. Ironically this property was part of the the
original William Chronicle plantation.
The map
above gives a general overview of the facility grounds.
